Mission Statement

The HAN-SF Undergraduate Leadership Award (HULA) is a competitive merit-based scholarship program that recognizes Haas undergraduate students who demonstrate potential or applied leadership within their studies, professional experiences, extracurricular activities, communities, and/or families. Additionally, HULA seeks to raise awareness of the Haas Alumni Network (HAN) by engaging students and alumni during the application process.

Vision Statement

HULA is a grass-roots effort organized, administered, and funded by the activities of the HAN-SF Chapter, its alumni members, and partnering organizations. HULA engages Haas alumni to assist in the selection of candidates by reading applications, volunteering at the leadership workshop and interviewing award finalists. It is the goal of HULA to build interest in HAN as students matriculate to the Haas alumni community.

Eligibility Requirements

  • All currently enrolled Haas undergraduate students (Juniors and Seniors) are eligible and encouraged to apply.
  • HULA is a one-time award. Students may re-apply each semester they are eligible and the program is offered.

HULA Winners

  • Five HULA winners for the Fall 2014 program will be awarded a scholarship of $1,000 each.

  • Application Deadline: Extended to Fri, 10/17/14 at 11:59 pm (originally Wed, 10/15)
  • Notification for Finalist Round: 10/20/14
  • Leadership Workshop: End of October or Early November
  • Finalist Interviews with Alumni: 11/16 and 11/23/14
  • Award Recipients Notified: Early December

HULA Scholars – Fall 2014!

Cathy LiuCathy Liu – Class of 2015, BS Business Administration, BS Molecular and Cell Biology

Cathy Liu is a senior pursuing a dual degree in Business Administration and Molecular and Cell Biology. Cathy is interested in the intersection between healthcare and business and spent her summer at the Boston Consulting Group working on a biopharmaceutical project. In her free time, Cathy can be found at trendy restaurants in the Bay Area and hiking in the Berkeley hills. Cathy is honored to have been chosen as a recipient for the HULA scholarship, and is looking forward to staying involved with HAN after graduation.

 

 

Cheryl NgCheryl Ng – Class of 2014, BS Business Administration, BA Economics

Cheryl Ng is a junior double majoring in Business Administration and Economics. She was born and raised in Indonesia, and runs her own nationwide organization which aims to serve underprivileged students and raise awareness for educational scholarships. On campus, she is involved in the ASUC Office of President as a Coordinator, Young Entrepreneurs at Haas, and previously served as an officer of the Berkeley Indonesian Student Association. Last summer, Cheryl interned at PricewaterhouseCoopers where she had the opportunity to provide strategies for telecommunication clients. In her free time, Cheryl loves to play badminton, travel, and act as she has appeared in previous television advertisements back home. Cheryl also speaks five languages. Cheryl is extremely excited to be involved in HAN in the future.

 

AriellaAriella Sosis – Class of 2014, BS Business Administration

Ariella Sosis is a junior majoring in Business Administration from San Diego. Passionate about helping find a cure for Crohn’s disease (which both her mother and sister suffer from), Sosis began a nonprofit “Oil Me for Research” which merges the art and music community to raise money for research. Since transferring to Haas from MiraCosta College, Ariella became heavily involved as the Oski Cohort Leader and as a consultant in the Undergraduate Marketing Association. Additionally, as a member of the UC Berkeley Music Collective, Ariella is forming a band which will also raise money for “Oil Me for Research”. ViVi Tran –Class of 2015, BS Business Administration

Vi Tran is the current Vice President of Academics of the Haas Business School Association. Vi has a passion for mentoring others both in her local and global communities. She has consistently gone beyond her duties as VP by hosting workshops for over 300 underclassmen applying to Haas, having weekly office hours for career advice, and connecting more businesses with Haas-sponsored clubs. In the past, Vi worked with Harvard University and UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health to conduct research in oral hygiene care in developing countries. She’s worked in the rural villages of Panama and orphanages in southern Vietnam. In addition, Vi and her team will represent UC Berkeley in the IBM Watson App Development University Competition in January 2015. Vi will graduate with a degree in Business Administration in May, and will begin working as a Management Consultant at Accenture in San Francisco this August.

 

NavgeetNavgeet King Zed (King) – Class of 2015, BS Business Administration, BA Rhetoric, Minor Global Poverty and Practice

King is a senior from Reno, Nevada, pursuing a degree in Business Administration and a degree in Rhetoric with a minor in Global Poverty and Practice. He has been involved at Haas as the Vice President of Community Development for the Haas Business School Association (HBSA) and as a course facilitator for the extremely popular Entrepreneurship Speaker Series DeCal. He is deeply passionate about harnessing the power of business to do good and make a global impact. He is the founder and President of Theta Delta Mu (TDM), the premier business fraternity that’s focused on social impact entrepreneurship. He has served in multiple leadership positions including being the Student Body President of Truckee Meadows Community College, Director of Micro-Equity International, Director of Finance and Operations for the UC Berkeley Food Pantry. Additionally, he is a certified mediator and was selected as the Nevada Peacemaker of the Year in 2006.

Julie BrownJulie Brown – Class of 2014, BS Business Administration, BS Forestry

Julie is a senior from La Mesa, California majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Forestry. Julie just finished an around the world trip studying, researching, and working across nine different countries on three different continents. On her first trip around the world she spent the majority of her time studying in Granada, Spain, researching the impacts of microfinance programs on women in Rabat, Morocco, and interning for Samsung Electronics in South Korea. On campus, Julie has held leadership roles in sustainability projects with The Green Initiative Fund and worked as Program Coordinator for UC Berkeley’s Campus Recycling and Refuse Services. Julie is passionate about international development, travel, and sustainability and plans on working internationally for 2-3 years after graduation. In her free time Julie likes to write on her blog (juliearoundtheworld.wordpress.com), cook in her crockpot, and sing.

 

Lucy ChenLucy Chen – Class of 2015, BS Business Administration
Lucy Chen is a current junior majoring in Business Administration and pursuing a CET Concentration in Engineering Leadership. As a strong believer in business for social good, Lucy has had extensive experience in nonprofit consulting and social entrepreneurship. Her past work experience includes account management at Lyft (formerly Zimride), strategy consulting at Pratham USA, an international education nonprofit, and marketing analytics with BPO Elite, a local consulting firm. Currently, Lucy works as an Email Marketing Specialist for Kiva, an international microfinance nonprofit, and a Business Operations Intern with Sellegit.com, a Berkeley-based Skydeck startup. On campus, Lucy is a cohort leader in the Haas Undergraduate Cohort Program and a two-time Leadership Award Scholar. She is also involved with on-campus consulting group, Net Impact, and business club, Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda. After graduation, Lucy hopes to pursue a career in management consulting and eventually, social entrepreneurship.

 

Jacob HiewJacob Hiew – Class of 2014, BS Business Administration
Jacob was born and raised in Singapore and is a senior at Haas. Before coming to Cal, Jacob served in the Singapore Armed Forces for two years, achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He spent his summer as a Business Analyst Intern in Deloitte Consulting’s Strategy & Operations practice, and will be returning to Deloitte after he graduates. In his free time, Jacob can be found sailing on the San Francisco Bay, competing for the Cal Sailing Team. Jacob is honored to have been chosen as a recipient of the HULA scholarship, and looks forward to being involved with HAN in the future!

 

 

Rosemary HuaRosemary Hua – Class of 2014, BS Business Administration, BA Political Science

Rosemary Hua is current President of the Haas Business School Association, CEO of Empathy FX International (a non-profit organization which uses profits from travel programs to build schools in Ghana), and COO of Umbrella (social networking application launching in January 2014). She has served in multiple leadership positions including being a Senator at UC Berkeley, co-founder of AFX Dance Team (UC Berkeley competitive dance team on campus), and co-founder of the University Catholic Conference of California (the first ever student-run state-wide conference for Catholic college students in California). Rosemary will graduate with two degrees (BA and BS) in Political Science and Business Administration in May, and will begin working as a Business Analyst at Amazon in Seattle this July.

 

Parisa MovahediParisa Movahedi – Class of 2014, BS Business Administration

Parisa is a senior from Los Angeles, CA, pursuing a major in Business Administration. She has been involved at Haas as the Executive Vice President of the Haas Business School Association and as the Bear Cohort Leader. As a transfer student from Santa Monica College, Parisa is extremely dedicated to making the transfer experience seamless and enjoyable for the classes to follow, as well as creating strong synergies with continuing students and Cal students in all majors. She also loves to sing as a member of the UC Women’s Chorale as a high soprano and has learned how to sing opera. As a SoCal native, Parisa plans to pursue a management consulting career in Los Angeles and join ZS Associates after graduation. She looks forward to contributing to the HAN-LA network to continue building strong Haaski ties everywhere. Eventually, Parisa hopes to obtain an MBA and other possible joint degrees to come back to school and have the opportunity to teach in the future.

 

Mercedeh SabetiMercedeh Sabeti – Class of 2015, BS Business Administration

Mercedeh Sabeti was born in San Jose and is a junior at the Haas School of Business. At school, Mercedeh is president of Berkeley Investment Group and grew its equity fund of student money from $60K to over $120K. As a freshman, Mercedeh was in Cal in the Capital and also previously interned at the ASUC Student Union Program, Entertainment, and Recreation Board, currently serving as its marketing manager. Mercedeh’s work experiences include completing an externship at Credit Suisse and working at the Markets Room in the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington DC, both of which prompted her passion for finance. Last summer, Mercedeh interned in investment banking at Goldman Sachs in New York City and will be returning there again next summer. In her free time, she enjoys pitching stocks, reading history, and writing scripts.

Shuonan Chen – Class of 2013, BS-Business Administration, BA-Rhetoric, BA-Economics

image001Shuonan is a senior from Vancouver, Canada studying Business, Economics and Rhetoric. Shuonan has held internships in the Corporate Finance and Valuation groups at PricewaterhouseCoopers as well as in the Legal Department at Chinese International Capital Corporation. On campus, Shuonan has held leadership roles in Consulting Club at Berkeley, Engineers Without Borders and UCBMUN. Shuanon is passionate about financial engineering and will be joining Goldman Sachs in its Investment Banking and Equity Capital Markets division after graduation. In her free time, Shuonan is a pilot and loves figure skating.

Sandy Diao – Class of 2013, BA-Business Administration

image003 Sandy is a Bay Area native studying business administration with a minor in Chinese. She is an entrepreneurial student who discovered her interest in business at the intersection of her pursuits in art and technology. The highlight of her college career is being a part of the Berkeley Women in Business community, serving as its leader to grow the club and alumnae network. At Haas, she is part of the External Case Competition team and is affiliated with various student organizations. In self-financing her college education through two part-time jobs, Sandy’s work pursuits have taken her into diverse realms such as real estate, corporate finance and financial services. Sandy is interested in freelance comic illustration, creative writing and social impact.

Clement Kao – Class of 2014, BS-Business Administration, BS-Molecular Biology

image005Clement is a junior pursuing a double-major in Business Administration and Molecular and Cell Biology. Clement is the founder and President of ENvision at Berkeley, an entrepreneurship club dedicated to spreading the spirit of innovation throughout the Berkeley campus. He is also an active committee member in the Asian Business Association and is currently working on a start-up of his own. Clement enjoys tutoring students in his spare time and is an avid reader of science publications.

Michael Ortiz – Class of 2014, BS Business Administration, BA Ethnic Studies

image007Mike is a transfer student from southern California who has relocated to Berkeley to pursue a double-major in Business Administration and Ethnic Studies. He contributes to the Haas Undergraduate Blog and sits on the executive boards of two campus music clubs, ElecTonic and Innovative Entertainment. Mike is also a re-founding member of the Beta-Xi chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at UC Berkeley. A passionate entrepreneur and producer of Electronic Dance Music, Mike plans eventually to open his own music record label. Mike’s recent immersion into the Haas culture has inspired him to find innovative ways to create new types of business model that give back to society through philanthropic and charitable means. Mike’s ultimate goal is to show others in the music industry that healthy alternatives exist to the status quo of making profits at the expense of artists, fans and local communities.

Paulina Ramos – Class of 2014, BS-Business Administration, BS-Computer Science

image009Paulina was born in the Philippines but moved to California at age 6 to be raised in the Bay Area. She is currently a junior at the Haas School of Business and plans to declare Computer Science as a second major. Paulina has been involved in a variety of organizations on campus as the Co-President of EthiCAL Apparel, Co-Founder of Venture Strategy Solutions, the Director of Consulting at IABC and the Co-Founder of Code the Change at Berkeley, an organization that connects non-profits with computer scientists. Paulina has worked alongside Haas MBAs in the Social Sector Solutions program to provide consulting services for social enterprises. Her professional experience includes internships in Global Wealth Management at Merrill Lynch and Technology Consulting at Residential Computing. Paulina loves fixing computers, going to rock concerts and designing web graphics in her free time. Paulina is overwhelmed with gratitude to have been chosen as a recipient of the HULA scholarship and is thrilled to be a future member of HAN-SF!

Sevly Snguon – Class of 2014, BS-Business Administration, BS-Public Health

image011Sevly Snguon is a junior pursuing a double major in Business Administration and Public Health at UC Berkeley. He is a Cambodian-American student, born and raised in Long Beach, California. Sevly currently works as an Upward Bound instructor for high school juniors, a program that seeks to create a pipeline to higher education for low-income and 1st generation students. Sevly is also an Executive Director for REACH!, an organization that seeks to empower immigrant, refugee and under-served Asian/Pacific Islanders by promoting higher education. In his free time, Sevly enjoys writing poetry and learning how to breakdance. After graduation, Sevly plans to enter the field of health administration with the goal of making healthcare accessible to under-resourced groups. Eventually, Sevly plans to pursue graduate school for an MBA/MPH to better understand the overlapping systems of health and business.

Elisa Yu – Class of 2014, BS-Business Administration

image013Elisa Yu is a junior majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. In her freshman year, Elisa co-founded the social justice organization Universal Love and Peace (ULAP) at Berkeley, spreading awareness of domestic and international social issues through musical performance, peaceful dialogue, community service and legislative change. Through ULAP, Elisa pursues her passion for music by composing lyrical melodies and working with the ULAP band to perform at benefit concerts. Elisa also leads a de-cal that promotes leadership by teaching students how to address social issues on the micro and macro levels. In addition to ULAP, Elisa is a member of the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship Association, Credit Union for Berkeley Students and the Cal Alumni Association’s Leadership Award Scholars Association.

Nanxi Liu – 2012 BS Business Administration, BA Political Economy

image015Nanxi is a senior studying business, engineering, and political economy at UC Berkeley. She is currently working on a start-up, Nanoly Biotech, that she founded with 3 PhD students. Nanoly is developing polymers that enable vaccines to survive without refrigeration so that immunizations may be delivered to rural areas in emerging countries. Before Nanxi found her passion in entrepreneurship, she interned in engineering at Cisco, derivatives trading at Citigroup and investment banking at Goldman Sachs. At Berkeley, Nanxi served as Vice President for the student body and held leadership roles in Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, American Nuclear Society and Engineers without Borders. Nanxi is from Boulder, Colorado and enjoys snowboarding.

Mark Fiorentino – 2012 BS Business Administration, BA Economics

image017Mark was born in Laguna Beach, California and has been a resident of Orange County for the majority of his life. Mark’s past work experience includes investment banking at Bank of America, business valuation at FMV Opinions, private wealth management at UBS, hospital administration and orthopaedic surgery at Kaiser Permanente and an externship at Anadys Pharmaceuticals in the Legal and Finance Departments. Mark interned at Goldman Sachs in New York, in its Investment Banking group and will be joining that group full-time after graduation. Eventually, Mark hopes to build on his HULA experience by founding a scholarship for Haas students facing family hardships.

Claire Lee – 2012 BS Business Administration

image019Claire is currently a senior at the Haas School graduating in just a few short weeks with a degree in Business Administration. A native of Southern California in Anaheim, Claire can’t wait to explore life in a completely different part of the country. Passionate about education, Claire will spend the next two years in Memphis, Tennessee as a Teach For America 2012 Corps Member. Claire has lead a variety of student communities as President of the Haas-sponsored consulting group for non-profits, The Berkeley Group, as a four-time Choreographer for The Movement dance organization and as founding Co-Executive Director of THRIVE Dance Company. Claire is excited to stay in touch with the HAN-SF community during her time in Memphis and plans to return to the wonderful Bay Area in two years.

Tyler Wishnoff – 2013 BS Business Administration

image021Tyler is a Berkeley native and is currently a junior at the Haas School. In addition to being a writer for the school’s Undergraduate Blog, he is the Vice President of Academics and Consultant for the Haas Business School Association. Tyler is also a representative for the Undergraduate Program Committee and the Center for Teaching Excellence. His work experience includes management level positions in both the retail and specialty food industry. Tyler is looking forward to a career in management consulting and social entrepreneurship.

Arting Chang – 2013 BS Business Administration/BA Psychology

image023Arting Chang is a Junior, pursuing a double major in Business Administration and Psychology at UC Berkeley. Arting was born in Taiwan and lived in Shanghai and Tokyo before moving to Walnut Creek, California. At school, she is part of the Haas external case competition team and actively involved in her sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi, as well as her business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. Arting’s work experiences include Division Manager of Slugbooks, wealth management at Merrill Lynch, an externship at Credit Suisse and a finance internship at Apple Computer. Arting completed a summer internship at JP Morgan in New York and will be joining its Investment Banking group full-time post-graduation. In her free time, Arting is an avid equestrian athlete and enjoys fashion and learning different languages. One day, Arting hopes to have her own company in the fashion industry. She is honored to have received the HULA scholarship and can’t wait to be involved in HAN in the future!

Ayan Agarwal – 2014 BS Business Administration/BA Economics

image025Ayan is an international student from Jaipur (India), relocating to Berkeley for college. Passionate about business formation, Ayan has been working as a teaching assistant for entrepreneurship classes at Haas since his freshman year. Ayan also serves as the chairman of the first Interfraternity Council’s Standard Board, an organization that seeks to resolve issues in the Greek community on a peer-governance basis. Ayan founded the Berkeley chapter of Students in Free Enterprise, a global organization that aims to promote philanthropic initiatives in local communities using business models and resources from Haas. Ayan also works for an Indian non-profit, the Bhoruka Charitable Trust, helping to promote its global internship program.
